How Unity courses can help you make your own video game

Many of us grew up playing video games and have been dreaming about making their own one day. Olivier Van der Linden went for it. After taking a Unity course held by our CEO, Mike, he now released his own mobile game. Spaaace is a space shooter for which he made everything by himself!

Unity Training as a Perfect Starting Point

Olivier always wanted to make video games. He has a developer background and he experimented with Flash and ActionScript back in the day. ‘’I studied as a programmer so I was already familiar with C# and Java, but when I tried to learn Unity on my own, the online tutorials aren’t always easy to follow and often don’t provide the exact answers you are looking for.’’ – he says.

‘’My impression is that these only give you a few bits and pieces. With the Unity training, you really get a general idea of what all the possibilities are. If you have any questions or come across any issues, you can always just ask the trainer. I had a great time and learned a lot taking this course!’’

When we asked about his game, Olivier shared that indeed he made everything himself. From the 8-bit music to the artwork, it’s all his. He even recorded the pew-pew laser sounds using his voice!

Create a Game in Weeks

So what we were wondering about is how much time it would take for someone to make their own game after finishing a Unity course?

‘’Since I really wanted to make everything myself, developing the game took some extra time for me.’’ – said Olivier. ‘’I also didn’t have too much time to work on it as I was busy with my job and renovation works. But I would say you can make a simple game such as mine in only a few weeks. Especially with an abundance of free assets available with Unity, you can make a platformer yourself surprisingly quickly.’’

Unity trainings are a great option for those who would like to make their childhood dreams come true and develop video games, as well as those who just want to try something new.

Unity: A Game Engine Relevant in Many Sectors

According to our CEO, Mike Coeck: ‘’Unity as a platform is gaining a lot of traction, not only in gaming but in many other sectors like the automotive and architecture. Having this knowledge can lead to new job opportunities and possible projects. Most importantly, you will be able to create your own games and bring your ideas to life.’’

Olivier’s game, Spaaace, is available to play on Itch.io!
